Buddha Bodai Vegan Mushroom Duck

We welcome Buddha Bodai, located at 77 Mulberry Street, one of the first vegan restaurants in Chinatown. Now, you can enjoy Buddha Bodai’s famous Vegan Mushroom Duck at the comfort of your own home! This dish combines the rich, savory taste of mushrooms with the texture of duck, all wrapped in a delicious plant-based protein.

Ingredients:

  • Wheat Flour
  • Wheat Protein

Cooking Suggestions:

Skillet Method:

  1. Heat 1-2 tablespoons of oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the vegan mushroom duck pieces to the skillet and cook for about 3-5 minutes on each side until they become golden and slightly crispy on the outside.
  3. Optionally, drizzle with soy sauce or hoisin sauce for extra flavor and cook for an additional minute.
  4. Serve hot with steamed rice, stir-fried vegetables, or as a main dish.

Steaming Method:

  1. Fill the bottom of a steamer with water and bring it to a boil.
  2. Place the vegan mushroom duck pieces in the steamer basket, ensuring they are not crowded.
  3. Steam for 8-10 minutes until the pieces are heated through.
  4. Serve immediately with dipping sauce or garnish with fresh herbs for added flavor.

Air Fryer Method:

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Lightly coat the vegan mushroom duck with a thin layer of oil or cooking spray.
  3. Arrange the pieces in the air fryer basket in a single layer.
  4. Cook for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the outside is golden and crispy.
  5. Serve hot with your favorite sides or dipping sauces.

Not a fan of vegan duck, but it tastes exactly how I remember. My sister loves it though.

Many vegan ingredients need a lot of herbs and spices to replace the umami of fat, but this duck is great as is and particularly nice over vegetable fried rice. I have also used them shredded in scallion pancakes or vegan versions of moo shoo "pork" with crepes
